Gyros

Gyros is certainly the most popular Greek street food. Gyros is the name for a large rotating vertical stick with pieces of meat that rotates and slowly cooks over a fire. Chunks of meat are then sliced and go into a sandwich from Greek pita bread, Cyprus pita bread, or a plain sandwich bun. As for the meat the usual is pork and chicken meat. The best thing about Gyros is the fillings. You can choose from standard ketchup and mayonnaise to more interesting options such as Tzatziki (garlic and cucumber mixed with yougurt), Russian salad (green peas, carrot and potato mixed with mayonnaise) or a spicy cheese topping. Fries are always a great addition.

Souvlaki

Greek fast food consisting of small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer. It is usually served in a pita sandwich with garnishes and sauces, or on a dinner plate, often with fried potatoes.

Souvlaki can be made from several different meats cooked on skewers and served with vegetables, rice, beans and/or pita bread. Traditionally, Greek souvlaki is made from marinated pork or lamb, but beef and chicken versions have become increasingly popular

Koulouri

Koulouri, a plain, circular bread topped with sesame seeds, is a popular breakfast option for many Greeks. Plain and simple and yet a delicious early morning treat. It has evolved with new flavors in addition to the traditional plain type. There is now koulouri with cheese, koulouri with, koulouri with cream and koulouri stuffed with black or green olives.

Bougatsa

Bougatsa is Thessaloniki’s favorite breakfast. It is a simple pastry pie made of layers of filo filled with a variety of fillings. There are many bougatsa shops in the city and it is definitely a delicacy worth to try. Most popular fillings are cheese and custard cream. The cream variety is served with powder sugar coating. Served in bite size pieces, it is great with milk or coffee.
