How To Be

So now you know who to approach. All you have to do is pick up the phone, make an appointment and wait for the day to arrive, right?

Not exactly.

When you make the meeting request, make sure you know how much time you will be given. Do you have a few minutes or a few hours? Who else is coming? Will you have their undivided attention or will there be others present? Do you need to submit information for review prior to the meeting or can you just show up? Do they have AV equipment if you need it?

So you have all that information and NOW you can wait for the day to arrive, right?

Not Exactly.

Do you know anything about the mandate or interests of the person you are meeting? Are they known for supporting certain social causes, what committees do they sit on? Have you googled them to see if there are any sensitivities around them?

Have you read the strategic or business plans of the organization you are approaching? Aligning with their goals will help ensure a win/win conversation.
