Tools To Improve Your Skill
A sketch allows you to seize quickly what your subject is doing. The famous Artist Leonardo Da Vinci was a great sketch artist, he was sketching everything from his studies and his designs, that’s in order for him to remember, document or getting an idea on how his inventions will look like.
Proceeding with the simplest way (that is in a few lines) gives you the ability to translate the pose with a minimum of time.
Mastering this stage will allow you to improve your skills as Sketch artist and Help you learn the basics on how to sketch like a pro. because it’ll sharpen your look which will quickly focus on the main part of a position. A sketch gives a solid base to your drawing.
The key for a successful sketch, it not thinking about how do i make this like but about rhythm.
What a rhythm?
It is simply the way lines connect and disconect, as well as their form.
A sketch is a form of communication more than a search for an accomplished drawing. It is the sign, as the Japanese character that is a footbridge towards a sense (the position of the model).
Let us take this model and let us try to pull its posture in some lines. Let us spot at first the rhythms. The position of the forearm, The changes of the directions of the outlines, the folds of clothes will be the main elements to which I am going to pay my attention at.
No it is not a comma but almost! It is the simplified shape of the vertebral column of this woman. I begin by placing (it) because (it) gives the general orientation of the posture in only a line.
I add two new lines (almost parallel) which are going to represent thighs. Beforehand I took time to spot their orientation which should be in the horizontal but I liked the idea of a light slope which goes to the general sense of the posture.
At this level I placed two new lines which divide the lower abdomen. It will be the location of the forearm. here you must observe well their orientation.
The head is placed, its egg-shaped form of which the right side of the face is more flat than the left one suggests that the face is turned to the right.
I sketch the last part of the leg. Notice as the line of the calf continues up to the ankle to become the sole of the foot. It is crazy what we can suggest with a single line, no?
In the previous stage we already have a clear idea of the position of the model. As soon as you have the sensation that the position is transcribed, you can stop. If you want to get into details then you can connect elements between them.
Here I connected the lines of the forearms with shoulders, add a hand and suggest the second foot with a curve.
These are some recommendations on how to sketch:
1. Surround only once
2. Draw in blank spaces rather than to go back on lines
3. Keep fluid lines
4. I favor the internal outlines to the outer outlines in the “closed” poses
Do not hurry up. Take time to observe before Start drawing. With a good observation your drawing will have less hesitation, you will be faster than if your observation was not enough pushed.
