Managing the Financial Burden of Employee Low Back Pain

Working at a desk all day and doing strenuous manual labor have at least one thing in common — they both can lead to back pain. Business leaders are frequently looking for ways to reduce the costs and loss of productivity associated with employee low back pain (LBP).

The recently published report, titled “Sore Points: How Much is Employee Back Pain Costing Your Company?”, discusses a growing employer concern, the costs resulting from LBP in the workplace. Over 84% of the population will experience at least one episode of low back pain in their lifetime, and nearly one in four employees reported experiencing lower back pain in the past three months.   • Annual cost of LBP to employers per 100 workers amounts to $34,600.
  • Back pain is #1 cause for work related disability in U.S.
  • Employees with back pain are absent an average of 4 days more each year than those without back pain, a total costs in lost productivity of $13,100 per 100 workers annually.
  • Presenteeism, or the act of attending work while sick, related to back pain adds up to $8,300 per 100 workers annually.
