Indian hopes at Rio Olympics (Shooting)

Since a breakthrough in Athens Olympics, India is consistently managing medals in shooting events. Rio is no different and there is lot of hope from 12 member strong contingent.

Let’s look at the results in this Olympic cycle (2013–2016) and assess medal chances. We are starting with “10m Air Pistol” scheduled on August 6.

In 10m Air Pistol event, India having 2 participants (Jitu Rai, Gurpreet Singh). Jitu Rai seems to be most promising. He has been as consistent as anyone else. The graphs below show his performance in last 3 years. The shaded area and the blue line display the trend.

Observations:

1: Jitu Rai seems to be improving his average point and rank this year

2: He was able to qualify for the finals (top 8) consistently

3. Jitu Rai has won multiple medals in World Cups

4: He participated in World Cup event in Rio this year however he narrowly missed the qualification for final.

Let’s hope Jitu finds his best form in Rio and also have some luck.

Note: Jitu Rai also participates in 50m Pistol. He is doing remarkably well in that event as well.
