The most important words I’ve yet to say

My vow to Stephanie on 3–12–16

Straight away I need to say a few things about this woman

I have to note her heart of gold and smile that glows like sun

Inextricably linked are they, those constantly upturned cheeks a reflection of what’s inside

Like light piercing the darkness, it does not know how not to glow, and so refuses to hide

So this is where my vow begins

To do my best to ensure that light never dims

To be a friend by your side, sharing desires and dreams

To be a rock when needed through struggles unforeseen

From the wise and worn cobblestones of a mid-March Italian street

To the pitter-patter footsteps of our future children’s feet

Through the many monumental moments we’ll meet along the way

I make it my mission to keep your frowns at bay

Though I will try, I cannot deny, I won’t always get it right

But so you know, my ultimate goal, is to keep those dimples flexing, and your light shining bright

And as long as there’s a rhythm in my chest and a gust in my lungs

I will weather all weather with you, the sunshine and the storms

So before the Man, in who’s house we stand, and anyone else who’ll lend an ear

I can proclaim without refrain or a single hint of fear

That you are beautiful inside and out, shining through all shadows cast

And I will love you with all I have from this breath to my last
