AccuWeather is Spying on You: Protect Your Privacy

AccuWeather is a not a weather company–they are a Spy.

AccuWeather collects location and personally identifying data on you even when you have location services turned off.

Even when you explicitly deny it from seeing your location–they are doing it anyway and collecting more than just your location.

This is super alarming.

It’s less alarming that they collect a bit of information about their users to improve their product and user experience. It’s extremely alarming that they are overriding a system preference to spy on you.

This is a big deal. You can’t trust AccuWeather, and you shouldn’t.

The even bigger deal is we can safely assume this app is not the only company spying on you behind the scenes. What other companies are spying on you?

Can you trust Snapchat? Instagram? What about Tinder and Bumble? Or Uber? Groupon and Yelp? Your news and sports apps like The Wall Street Journal and ESPN? Or messaging apps? Travel apps?

The list goes on and on…

What does this mean?

We need more transparency, more honesty and privacy rights that have teeth. AccuWeather has broken the law and broken our trust and they need to be held liable.

What should you do?

Uninstall AccuWeather AND uninstall any app that you do not inherently trust.

All we have is trust, and if we can’t trust a weather app–who can we trust?
