Humana’s Focus on the Future
By Bruce Broussard, President and CEO of Humana
Throughout its history, Humana has been dedicated to improving people’s health, from our start as a nursing home company more than 50 years ago through our transition to a hospital company and today as a health and wellness enterprise.
Our focus moving forward will hone in on an important emerging health care challenge in our country — helping people who are living with chronic health conditions better manage their health, on their own as well as through their relationships with their doctors. This opportunity is particularly important within the Medicare population because more than 85 percent of seniors have at least one chronic condition and 65 percent have multiple chronic conditions.
We understand that healthcare is complicated, and dealing with multiple physicians and other healthcare professionals can be a confusing and daunting task. That is one of the principal reasons why Humana will enhance its integrated care delivery strategy in key areas to enable a better, more seamless locally delivered healthcare experience for our members.
One of the ways we will do that is by partnering with physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacies, and primary care clinics. What that will mean for our members is that the teams caring for them will all have a perspective on the individual’s total health by sharing their history of treatment decisions through our investments in health technology. Through predictive analytic modeling, we will also give doctors and other care providers more information about the likelihood of certain health outcomes in the context of a vast history of patients who faced similar health conditions. Humana’s experience has shown that when we combine better information with a coordinated-care team approach, our members have better quality of life, better health outcomes, and lower costs.
We also often hear from members and their caregivers about their desire to receive care in the setting that is most comfortable and familiar to them — their homes. By building out capabilities that support appropriate, effective home health care, local and convenient access to prescription drugs that help control chronic conditions, and the resources needed to align mind and body, we believe we can improve the healthcare experience. This holistic care model allows our members to stay in their communities with their family and friends.
We look forward to the future and helping our members achieve their best health by simplifying their health care experience — one that combines their unique needs and the clinical aspects critical to improving their lifelong health and well-being.
