Neuschwanstein Castle was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle
The construction of the castle was initiated by King Louis II of Bavaria, also known as “the Mad King” due to his eccentric reputation and passion for building castles.
Louis II was inspired by the operas of Richard Wagner, particularly “Lohengrin” and “Tristan und Isolde”.
The first stone was laid on September 5, 1869, under the direction of architect Eduard Riedel, but he was soon replaced by Georg von Dollmann.
