Who’s got your back?

Deciding to run for president is a huge decision that affects everyone in a candidate’s life, but most especially their spouses. The Republican Party has a wide range of nominees coming in to 2016, but all of the top contenders have one thing in common: they’re married! Let’s see how the wives of the top Republican presidential nominees stack up against each other.

Rand Paul’s first lady is no stranger to the world of politics. She once worked for a political consulting firm and even worked on Ted Cruz’s Senate campaign. She is also active in fundraising for veterans’ charities, as well as promoting her new book True and Constant Friends. She and Rand met at a backyard oyster roast in 1988 and have three sons together.

The first lady of Wisconsin is also involved in charity work, including the faith-based organization Teen Challenge of Wisconsin, which is dedicated to the healing and rehabilitation of teens and young adults with substance abuse addictions. She formerly worked for the American Diabetes Association and now works for the American Lung Association. Tonette Walker met her husband Scott, twelve years her junior, at a karaoke night. They have two boys together.

Most people know that Marco Rubio’s wife used to be a Miami Dolphins cheerleader, but not much else. She’s been shying away from the media spotlight since the beginning of her husband’s political career. The daughter of Columbian immigrants, the mother of four chooses to focus her time on the couple’s children, choosing to stay away from the negativity of politics for the moment.

Columba Bush was born in León, Guanajuato, Mexico. Her father abandoned the family when she was 3 years old in 1956. Columba remained in León with her mother while her father emigrated to the United States. She met Jeb Bush when they were both teenagers. Bush was teaching English as a second language and assisting in the building of a school in a small village outside of León, Guanajuato, Mexico, as part of a class at Andover called Man and Society. At the time of their wedding, she couldn’t speak English, so part of the ceremony was in Spanish! She and the former governor of Florida have two sons and a daughter.

The wife of Ted Cruz is very accomplished in her own right. The Senator from Texas met his wife while they were both working on the George W. Bush presidential campaign of 2000. She is currently taking leave from her position as head of the Southwest Region in the Investment Management Division of Goldman, Sachs & Co. and previously worked in the White House for Condoleezza Rice and in New York as an investment banker. She and Ted Cruz have two young daughters together.
