The Day I Met an Angel

We never know who is going to come into our lives at any given time. It is always best to be open minded. That way we will be able to be receptive to people who come into our lives to impact us in major ways. That’s what the case was with me exactly a year ago from this day.

A year ago I went to check out an apartment to live in as I was in desperate need of finding a place with the month winding down. I wasn’t having much luck with Craigslist so I asked around and a friend of mine referred me to a link of the top ten sites to use to find a room in New York City to rent. I went down the list and signed up for a couple of them. One in particular was www.diggz.co. It was a bit different from any site that I used previously to find an apartment. It required me to fill out a questionnaire of my living habits, bio, Facebook link, include a few good pictures of myself, my budget and select which neighborhoods that I was interested in. I completed all the information and started my search as the site filtered the results according to what I was looking for. The first person I matched with had a place in Bushwick not far from where I had lived two years previously. I liked Brooklyn a lot and was hoping I could get back there anyway. I had to move quickly so I asked her if I could look at it the next day. Sydney was cool with me coming by the following day to view the place. I got off work a little early to make it there by 7:30 pm. I was met at the bottom of the door by her current roommate who led me up the steps to their place. I walked in and was immediately surprised by how spacious the apartment was. They showed me what could become my room. It was very big with a good size closet which was important to me. I noticed how the kitchen was opened up compared to typical small kitchens in NYC apartments. I liked that a lot since I wanted to get back into cooking more. I could tell that the place was remodeled recently and they told me that the landlord had remodeled it two years ago. The apartment building included a nice backyard that had a nice set up and a wash machine and dryer in the basement. I was sold as my eyes had just taken in the best apartment I’ve ever seen in NYC. Sydney started explaining to me what would be needed to get approved to move in by September 1st. As she was explaining everything I would need, I was contemplating it in my head and nerves started to set in. She had told me that the landlord requires first months rent, last months, and a security deposit. On top of that the landlord would need to run a credit check on me and I would have to prove my income. I knew my credit was shaky and aside from having to come up with that large sum of money to move in, the monthly rent was a little out of my budget but I just thought if I always cooked at home and didn’t go out as much then I’d be ok. I ended up hanging out there for three hours. They offered me a beer and then Sydney even went to the bodega to buy more beers which was extremely generous of her. They made me feel very comfortable and it felt good. I was certain that I wanted to live there so I was going to do whatever I could to land the apartment.

The following day I sent a text to Sydney thanking her for the hospitality. She responded in a way saying it was her pleasure and asked me about the girl that I was meeting up with that night. I ended up busting my ass to get everything in within a week and a half span. I then signed the lease and moved in on September 1st. I was very happy that everything worked out. The next night Sydney and I got into a deep conversation about our goals and what we’re passionate about. We stayed up talking ‘till 4 am despite me being exhausted from running around all day at the office. I felt a strong bond immediately and it was really cool to connect with my roommate like that. She then went on to tell me how she persuaded the landlord Gloria into accepting me as a tenant. I was in awe that she would be so kind to help my case as to why I should live there with them. I was extremely grateful and it felt like an angel had come into my life to help me out in a major way.

I felt real comfortable in my new place and started to build a genuine friendship with someone for the first time since I’ve lived in New York City. It felt amazing to have someone who was always willing to go out and experience a good time with me. I didn’t have much when I moved in so I needed to put money aside to buy things like a bed and dresser. I have a tendency to procrastinate on things that I really need to get done. There was one night where Sydney sat down on the couch with me in the living room with her computer out and searched on websites for an affordable bed and dresser for me. That was incredible of her to take time out of her day without me asking her to and help me find what I need to be comfortable in my living headquarters. I never met someone in NYC like her. She was extremely generous without expecting anything in return knowing she could get perks out of me. That shows the type of character that is ingrained in her.

I’ve learned in the past with going through different situations that God puts certain people in our lives for periods of time for different reasons. It’s not worth it to try and wonder why or force people in our lives who have already outlasted their time. I knew that I went through the struggle of making it in NYC so God sent an angel to help me with the life that I deserved in this crazy tough city. This angel helped me get into a beautiful apartment. This angel helped me pick out a bed, dresser and even put those pieces together for me without me asking. This angel cooked amazing meals for me. This angel would ask me if I needed anything while she was out at a particular store. This angel allowed me to be myself around her. This angel was the most generous and kind soul that came into my life. This angel became my girlfriend who I love and appreciate every day. I am forever grateful for meeting this angel Sydney Pringle on August 25th, 2016!
