While you correctly point out that Nintendo has a history of identifying fads and playing to them, they had nothing to do with the development of this app. Niantic’s (the developer) previous game was also a location based AR game and I think everyone — Nintendo included — understands that Pokémon is uniquely perfect for this type of game.
