My Relationship with Email

My relationship with email? Well, as they say, it’s complicated. I love it — easy updates from my team, quick check-ins with colleagues around the world, confirmations that lunch is on the way. But it also drives me crazy. We’re in a dysfunctional relationship.

I’m attentive. I always clean out my inbox and return all my messages before I leave the office.

We get along pretty well for most of the day.

I leave work, but email, my partner, never leaves my side.

I make sure everything’s good with email before I go to bed.

But email stays up. I love email, I really do. But the problem is, email just never shuts up.

Most of it’s useless but harmless, even funny at times. But I check it anyway. I can’t help myself. Because once in a while, there’s an important message, from my boss.

I used to look forward to my time with email.

We never have a quiet morning cup of coffee any more, just me and email and the newspaper and the birds outside chirping.

We have to get this relationship back to when it was good.
