Comparing the words in news reports on the umbrella revolution.

The umbrella revolution has gone. But Hong Kong wears scars from Occupy Central that will not heal overnight. With the passion fading out, now there are more introspection and reflection. When reviewing the news reports during that time, we will figure out there are various smells, inclination, sense and bias.

A news report from South China Morning Post on Oct. 19, 2014, mentioned that “New clashes broke out between protesters and police in Mong Kok early this morning, after a day which saw significant progress on attempts to bring students and the government round the table to thrash out a solution to bring three weeks of street protests to an end.”

Here it uses “clash”, the evaluation of which should be 3, the potency of which should be 7, since there are some more powerful words like “warfare”, and the activity of which should be 10. To a extent, the South China Morning Post uses a comparatively reasonable tone to describe the event. But the word itself is still very attractive.

While in a news report on Dec 06, 2014, Apple Daily used a more emotional way to report. It used “Police brutality and cruel policemen” to recur. Let’s focus on “cruel”, the E of which is -10, and the potency should be 10, and the activity should also be 10. Here the adjective has apparent tendentiousness but it can also be very easily noticed.

The words will directly strike the reader and bring incentives.
