Make that Change
It has been 77 days since 1 Jan 2015. The first quarter of the year is almost coming to an end. In retrospect, what have you done for the last 77 days? Have you achieved what you had set out to do since the beginning of the year? Put it in another perspective, 1,488 hours has passed since 1 Jan 2015. Did you make every hour count?
If the reality is only sinking in now, fret not. There are 288 days or 6,912 hours left before the clock strikes 12 to a brand new year. What can you do now to achieve your goals for the year?
LIST DOWN YOUR GOALS
Research has proven that writing down your goals keeps you focused on them and ensure that forces you to focus on them. Listing down your goals will:
- Give clarity in achieving your goals, helping you formulate clear and measurable milestones to work towards;
- Reveal the purpose for your goals which becomes a powerful motivator to push you towards the finishing line;
- Help you commit to your plans and have a strong follow through;
- Review your progress and lets you fine-tune your plans in moving towards your goals; and
- Create positive reinforcements when you celebrate successes along the way.
STEP OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
“A comfort zone is a beautiful place. But nothing ever grows there.”
— Unknown
The biggest hindrance to making any change in life is to step out of one’s comfort zone. Growth happens outside the comfort zone. Take small, deliberate steps every day to do something to get you closer to your goals. Set yourself to achieve 5% or 10% more on what you are working on. Should you fall short, at least you are closer than when you began. Review your goals frequently and keep track of your progress. Small improvements over time will lead to big gains.

BE A DOER
In her commencement speech to Darmouth’s Class of 2014, Shonda Rhimes — acclaimed creator, writer and producer of ABC hits Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice — told graduates that, “It is hard work that makes things happen and it is hard work that creates change. Ditch the dream and be a doer, not a dreamer.”
There is still time to achieve those goals. Start now. Make every day count.
List your goals, get out of your comfort zone and be a doer. Make that change today.
