Brooklyn Members of Congress Should Endorse Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal

According to the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, we have just ten years to cut global carbon emissions in order to ward off the worst climate consequences. Meanwhile, record-breaking wildfires and storms are devastating communities across the nation, and scientists agree that climate change is making these natural disasters stronger. More and more plant and animal species are becoming extinct with each year, jeopardizing our food supply and public health. Global temperatures continue to rise.

And it will get worse.

The time for climate action is now. Democrats must put forth a bold, comprehensive plan to significantly cut emissions, hold corporate polluters accountable, invest in green infrastructure and jobs, and promote economic justice and equality .

Congresswoman-elect Ocasio-Cortez’s draft resolution for a Green New Deal is exactly the kind of proposal we need. Not only does it mark out a path to achieve carbon neutrality, but it envisions climate action as a means to tackle income inequality and grow our economy. Her proposal sets a concrete deadline of 2020 for committee members to draft legislation that will transform our economy and protect our planet by creating green jobs, shifting to renewable energy, and limiting carbon emissions.

As Brooklyn-based organizations, we call on all of our members of Congress — Yvette Clarke, Hakeem Jeffries, Jerry Nadler, and Max Rose — to support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s draft resolution to create a select committee for a Green New Deal. We applaud Congresswoman Velazquez’s recent announcement of her intent to do so.

Finally, to have the independence needed to put forth an aggressive plan to address climate change and take on corporate polluters, we call on our members of Congress to insist that the select committee consist only of members who reject contributions from the fossil fuel industry.
