In September, after President Trump revoked the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided young people who arrived in the United States as children some relief from deportation, Senator Schumer promised to protect Dreamers, but not yet. We were told to wait until December. In the meantime, thousands of young people have been deported, and more are living in fear.

In September, Senator Schumer let Republicans raise the debt ceiling without a fight and with no demands, saying, we will have even more leverage in December. In December, they told us, Democrats could make demands — for the DREAM Act, disaster relief, and CHIP funding, among other imperatives.

Well, now it is December. Democrats have leverage. Finally, they can get something done that will actually help people. Finally, they can pass the DREAM Act and protect the nearly 800,000 taxpaying young people who have only known this country as their home.

The DREAM Act has overwhelming support among all voters — Democrats, Independents and Republicans. Even many Congressional Republicans say they support it. But Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made it clear he has no intention of bringing this bill to a vote. Moreover, with a Congress that dawdles on disaster relief but rushes to give tax cuts to the wealthy, we have no reason to believe that Republicans can be trusted to ever make protecting Dreamers a priority.

Which is why Democrats must take matters into their own hands. Every day they wait means another young person deported and a family destroyed. Tomorrow, Senator Schumer and his colleagues have an opportunity to go on the offensive and finally, pass a clean DREAM Act.

Here is our message to him: We all want to support you. We all want to work with you. But if you let this opportunity go by, if Democrats squander yet another chance to fight back, we will hold you — not the President — accountable for the lives of 800,000 Dreamers, and we won’t back down.
