The Young Socialists uprising vs The Old Conservative rule.
There is something interesting happening in western politics. It’s the rise of socialist movement (and by socialist I don’t mean nuclear wielding Russian crazies)
The major change is with the young generation and the fact that without change their future is truly over before it’s even begun when buying a house is merely a pipe dream and to have everything your parents had been nothing more than a fantasy. The young realise they’re been used as a scapegoat for problems created by the older generation, the generation which is voting for the Tories to make sure the youth pay for what they have done.
Growing up through the 1950’s there was a housing programme which meant millions of council houses were built, which meant you had the option to buy your own council house in the future, the NHS was just starting out and help through social government was being expanded, school meals and education was free and paid with general taxation, not to mention on weekends and after school an abundance of activities in your local areas like swimming pools and libraries were at your disposal. The job market was healthy with many professions and trades available and pay rose year on year. Now, I’m not saying everything was perfect but compare it to today and understand the annoyance and frustration of the new socialist youth.
Now fast forward to 2008 and you have just graduated in a recession, jobs and nowhere to be seen and the government who have been voted in by the same people who enjoyed everything I have just mentioned above are now saying we need to cut the debt and YOU! are going to pay for it, (just make sure you protect our pensions and rates) To be honest you’re seen as the lucky ones because teenagers behind you will now have larger student debts and no grants to help pay for it, all thanks to the LibDem/Conservative coalition. You witness the government protecting pension rates and slashing higher rates of income tax but at the same time telling you “we are all in this together”. Even if you got the job of your dreams after university you cannot afford to move out, your choices are to stay at home or move into a house share which is owned by someone who had the opportunity of getting a council house, buying it and taking advanced of the fact that (a) young people cannot afford their own home (b) that the government hasn’t built any council houses in years.
So pouring your money into a dark endless pit that is the rental market to working for a company which probably gave you a zero hours contract, you see your NHS is being sold off to any Tom, Dick or China and every benefit which help your parents’ generation has now been cut or completely ruled out of helping you.
The young people voting for Jeremy Corbyn or Bernie Sanders aren’t hippies or radicals they’re people who understand what is ahead of them, they understand truly how bad things are for this generation and if change doesn’t come, then life for them will truly be unpleasant and a real struggle. The young socialist movement sees Sanders and Corbyn as two people who can lead them out of this mess and back to greater equality and plenty of opportunities for success and security, which the older generation got to enjoy.
Socialism isn’t Russia or war to this generation, socialism is freedom, Equality, NHS, affordable housing and a government interested in creating meaningful jobs and a far better well-being for its citizens. For the young generation, this is a moment in time they cannot gamble away, they stand and fight or prepare for a life of struggle and resentment.
