Navigating Care with the Euki App
Euki—the privacy-first period tracking app—uses evidence-based information to make sexual and reproductive health care resources accessible through a secure digital platform.
Euki is the privacy-first period tracker. But it’s also so much more.
Through a partnership with Women Help Women, Ibis Reproductive Health released Euki in 2019 to provide a new model of health information and tracking technology. Rooted in research, Euki sought to fill the gap in available sexual and reproductive health (SRH) apps that ignored user’s privacy and security concerns and left behind comprehensive, inclusive SRH information. Earlier this year, Euki announced their new home as a dedicated, independent 501(c)3 nonprofit tech organization!
This month, Euki released a new Care Navigator feature designed to help users privately access accurate information about abortion via ineedana.com’s database of care providers and practical support organizations. By layering this new feature on top of their secure and private infrastructure, pairing it with the app’s existing educational content about reproductive health services — including lesser-known options such as self-managed abortion — Euki helps empower people to make informed, private decisions about whether, how, and where to get abortion care.
The Care Navigator is currently available as a Public Beta, which means that it has been built and tested extensively for key privacy features AND will continually improve its design and function by incorporating feedback from users and collaborators. People with both lived experience and technical expertise were behind this tool, including Euki’s User Advisory Team, legal experts on privacy and reproductive rights, technical experts on privacy and cybersecurity, reproductive health tech organizations and other partners.
So what makes it private? With consideration of the most hostile scenarios for surveillance and subpoena, some key features include:
- Anonymity. There are no user accounts, phone number sign-ups, or email verifications needed to use Euki.
- Data deletion. Users can set their data to automatically delete at their choosing. Once data is deleted on the device, it’s gone forever — Euki never stores or collects user data on the cloud or anywhere else.
- PIN protection. Users can set an optional PIN to protect their data for device security. Just make sure you remember your PIN, as there’s no way to recover it!
- No data collection. Euki DOES NOT collect or store data on a cloud. Instead, your data lives on your phone, in the app, and isn’t shared anywhere else.
In-app access to evidence-based resources also ensures privacy by avoiding the use of external web browsers and search engines. Additionally, users can customize their educational resource dashboards (Info 👁) by hiding and/or renaming tiles, and info that you bookmark (🔖) can be accessed here, too.
Euki’s Care Navigator is an upstream intervention that allows users to privately search, filter, and save up-to-date information about abortion care providers and practical support organizations — all within the same period-tracking app where they may first realize they could be pregnant.
The app will guide users through the new tool, and provide explanations about the terminology and information that appears in the Care Navigator to ensure users understand every step of the abortion seeking process.
Using this feature:
- When you click “See care results” you will be asked if you want to customize your results by answering a few questions. These questions help to filter the information on the Results page, and can be updated or deleted at any time. If you’ve already entered and saved your answers, then clicking “See care results” will bring you back to your curated Results page. To go directly to the Results screen, select “Not now” to see the full provider and support directory.
- From the Results page, you can add, update, or delete your answers by clicking on “Edit answers”. You also have the option to add filters for providers and other support options. Screen results by abortion type (medication, procedural), model of care (in-clinic visit, virtual visit, no visit required), state (or nationwide), and financial, legal, emotional, and logistical support.
- Your curated Results page can be saved for a period of your choosing (auto delete after one day, or up to six weeks). You can also delete it at any time by clicking “Delete answers” on the Results page.
- When you click on a care option, you will see a “Profile” page with information about local laws, forms of payment, providers, accessibility, and more. You can also add a note (up to 500 characters), which can be saved and viewed from either the Results page or the individual Profile page. BONUS: You can filter your Results page by care options that you’ve added notes to!
