My point is that upholding the ideals of free speech works splendidly for those who advocate tolerance, understanding, and moderation. Whether or not white nationalists advocate free speech for other reasons is almost immaterial — maybe one wants to be aware that they advocate it for self-serving reasons, but being made to sound cruel and dumb is a pretty big disincentive (similar in magnitude to having thousands of people counterprotest against you), so I don’t see what the danger is.

There is no trap. Or if there is, it’s one that white nationalists are setting for themselves, hoping that nobody will spring it on them.

(Telling someone “you’re cruel and dumb” doesn’t make them look cruel and dumb, but telling stories about how real people have been treated cruelly because of a particular perspective makes that perspective look cruel, and those who have it look dumb for denying that there’s any problem.)
