Andela Expectations and How I Intend to Achieve Them

It has been a week of learning - learning about the vision and mission of Andela; learning about the various departments in the organization, their roles and responsibilities and how things work within the organization; learning what is expected of me as a fellow and learning what I need to do to succeed in Andela.

There are some key takeaways for the week. The different departments at Andela are here for the fellows, to support us and help us succeed. The organization is on a mission and we have been chosen to be a part of this movement. A mission to ensure that Africa has a voice in the global technological advancement, a mission to evenly distribute opportunities since brilliance is evenly distributed, a mission to ensure that while the digital revolution may have begun in Silicon Valley, it’s future will be written in Lagos, Nairobi, and cities across Africa. The organization, also, has a friendly atmosphere where you can easily walk up to anyone and seek help if you have challenges.

For Andela to succeed in its mission, some expectations have been set for Fellows who are the people to bring the vision to fruition. We are expected to have a growth mindset, to work more than we’ve ever worked and deliver more than we ever knew we could deliver. We are expected to own the values of the organization — Excellence, Passion, Integrity and Collaboration; and to be ambassadors of the organization wherever we find ourselves. As new intakes, we are expected to complete 2 checkpoints and 2 projects within 3 months. After 6 months, we are expected to have progressed to D1 where we start making money for the company.

In order to meet these expectations, I’ve decided to work more than I’ve ever worked, to own my learning and go far and wide in my search for knowledge, to ask questions when I am confused, to seek help from fellows or staff when I have challenges, to seek feedback and act on it, to collaborate with my peers, to find a mentor for every challenging goal that I seek to achieve and to talk to my facilitator on time when I cannot meet up with a deadline. It might look very challenging. Well, it is. That’s what we do at Andela, we embrace challenges and see it as an opportunity to grow and learn. We are people who work hard to meet and exceed expectations. This is who we are. This is Andela!
