This is a very important read for me, because I don’t talk about race, either.

The only thing I can think of to do in order to try to combat this white privilege racism is to help educate those in my sphere of influence. I had my eyes opened to systemic racism by a coworker who shared an office with me. We approached each other with initial trepidation, because I had never been that close to a Black woman before, and she had never been that close to a White. But as we got to know each other, we opened up to each other and had some truly brave discussions of our feelings. She made me aware of so many things that were all around me when I opened my eyes to them. How, for example, I always got waited on in stores ahead of Black women if we got to the checkout at the same time. This held true even if the clerk was Black, because Black people are taught to defer to Whites, which is another nuance of the overall problem. I understand what I am a part of, although I don’t know what it’s like to live it from the other side, and it’s hard to figure out how to fix it. What I say to Black people is, you HAVE to talk to White people about race. They will never understand if you don’t! I know it’s exhausting. My friend and I had many discussions before I began to believe her and really start to see it. Meanwhile, I’ll pass on this article to my friends and try to influence discussion where I can. Thanks for this great article!
