At my current degree program, I have noticed the same trend. Of course, people with any prior experience in the field or in related areas will have a better portfolio — no matter how good or mediocre they are their portfolios are still better than those of people who merely had studied the subject in the program for a few months, like myself.

However, I believe when employers look at our portfolios while seeking candidates for the summer internships, in many cases that difference is very visible.
