Amarillo TX is located in the panhandle of the state. It is one of the prettiest areas in the state and is home to more than 200,000 people. The city is the county seat of Potter County and is located in the Llano Estacado region of northern Texas. The area is home to some of the largest ranches in the world, including the JA Ranch which has operated since 1877. The city was originally known as Oneida and the name was later changed to Amarillo.
The name Amarillo is believed by some to be based on the yellow wildflowers which bloom in the spring and summer. Others think the name came from Amarillo Creek and Amarillo Lake both of which were named for the yellow soil found along their shores and banks.
Amarillo sits in the Texas panhandle and enjoys a climate more like Oklahoma than the rest of Texas. The are is dry and flat and when there is rainfall it normally evaporates quickly or becomes one of the many playa lakes.
Amarillo offers visitors many attractions, but the most popular is the Cadillac Ranch. This attraction is located just outside of town and its main feature is the ten Cadillacs buried with their front end in the ground. in 1974, local millionaire Stanley Marsh III buried all ten cars in the middle of a wheat field. The site soon began attracting visitors from all over the world.
Marsh encourages visitors to become part of the attraction by spray painting the cars. He considers the cars an art project and wants visitors to place their personal touch on the project.
Another famous attraction just outside of Amarillo is the Big Texan Steakhouse. In this restaurant, adventurous eaters try and consume an entire 72-ounce steak in an hour. If they do, the entire meal is free. The guest must eat both the steak and all the sides in the hour. It can be done as proven by the more than 7,000 people who have successfully eaten everything within the time limit.
Downtown Amarillo is another great area to visit. This is the place where locals go to enjoy the nightlife and there are many restaurants and bars to choose from.
There are also other attractions to visit, including the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum and the Amarillo National Center. Outdoor enthusiasts won’t want to miss Palo Duro Canyon, State Park.
Amarillo TX is a great place to visit. There are many things to see and do with enough attractions to keep everyone in the family happy.
