Amarillo is one of the top most populous cities in Texas. In fact, it ranks at approximately the 14th largest city in the ‘Lone Star’ state, and is the largest city in the Texas panhandle.
Originally named Oneida, is in the region of Llano Estacado. The city’s growth has been attributed to the availability of freight and railroad service that was offered by the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad company. This industry helped to propel Amarillo as a major hub for cattle marketing.
As the once self-proclaimed ‘Helium Capital of the Earth’, Amarillo once has the United States’ most productive and largest helium fields. The city also has another nickname, ‘The Yellow Rose of Texas’. It acquired this name because ‘Amarillo’ is the Spanish word for ‘yellow’.

The History Of Amarillo

Texas has always been widely known for its vast ranches. Amarillo was home to many ranches including the now closed XIT Ranch. There is one ranch that still operates in the city and is the JA Ranch. This ranch was founded in the late 1800s.

During the 1880s, JI Berry set aside a parcel of land that would later be known as Amarillo. The land was considered rich and fertile land because it was a well-watered area of Fort Worth. Merchants who lived in the area wanted to make their town the main trading city for the area. In August of 1887, the county seat election was won and Potter County was established.

The Army base for Amarillo was reactivated in 1951 as an Air Force Base, and the arrival of servicemen and their families help lead to the end of the depression that plagued the city after World War II. Thus, the city saw a huge population increase between 1950 and 1960.

The Landscape Of The City

Much of the city’s commercial and population has occurred in the northwestern and southern parts of the city. As like other towns that are located in the panhandle of Texas, the city suffered during the economic deterioration that occurred during the years.

The Center City was established to help boost the economic climate and to bring business back to Amarillo. Since the organization’s inception, numerous block parties and public arts projects have started in the city.

The Chase Tower, the Santa Fe building and a skate park on the west side of the city are some of the most recognizable landmarks in the city.

Amarillo has overcome adversity and economic hardships to become one of the most popular towns. It continues to grow and flourish, and has become a popular tourist destination.
