You are 100% correct in this article. Daniel in the comments is what white America is. They look the other way, believe exactly what the news tells them, and are oblivious because of the “it won’t happen to me” mentality. It’s sad that the people with the privilege don’t realize the types of privileges we enjoy simply by being white. Yes, Daniel S. Thompson, I am a white person. I enjoy things that my friends whom are black, latino, and African (there is a difference between being Black and being African) cannot enjoy on a day to day basis. I can run a red light and don’t have to worry about being pulled over and shot by a police officer. I can wander around a store without having someone shadowing me afraid I am going to steal from them. I walk anywhere I want to and do not have to be afraid of having the cops called on me for doing so.
People with white privilege do not realize they have it. They think it has something to do with being rich, or having big houses, and other things. When in fact white privilege is being able to do things without being watched. White privilege is being able to not have to fear the police, and being able to call the police without the fear of you yourself being taken to jail.
You may say, “Just obey the law and everything will be fine”. This is not true. It is only true for white and people who can pass as white. If you are dark skinned the police will stop you for no reason, question you for no reason, but it is not just the police. My friends have been stopped by people on the street asking if they could buy some drugs. You know who the people were who stopped them? White people. Do you know why? Because most white people think that if a person is Latino or Black they are automatically in a gang or a drug dealer. In fact there have been numerous times that nosey white people have sent the police to my Latino friend’s home because “he must be illegal”! Until White America wakes up these things will continue to happen. Stop fearing people because of their differences and stop believing the lies and slander the news outlets put out there to villainize the victims of police brutality and shootings.
