Small businesses hold an eminent place in our society, driving not only economic development but also enriching our daily lives in numerous ways. From job creation to driving GDP growth, these establishments have left an indelible impact. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that small businesses account for 64% of new jobs created in the U.S., signifying their significance in the employment landscape. Moreover, they contribute to roughly half of the country’s GDP, further emphasizing their critical role in bolstering the economy.

Yet, despite their incredible potential, small businesses often struggle with operational inefficiencies and a lack of comprehensive people management systems. While solutions crafted for larger corporations cannot be directly applied to small businesses, a thoughtful transformation tailored to their unique needs is essential.

For 17 years, author, speaker, and entrepreneur Kumar Vijayendra has committed his professional life to this transformation. As a thought leader and strategist, he seeks to overhaul the operations of small businesses, enabling them to unleash their untapped potential.

Vijayendra is a regular columnist for leading trade journals including CEOWORLD Magazine, in which he recently discussed how the key to sustainability is continuous operational excellence. “Today, sustainable practices protect finite resources and support the health of the ecological system, humans, and the economy,” he wrote. “Despite this healthy push toward sustainability, one of the most overlooked yet biggest players in this arena is small businesses.”

He went on to say, “Small businesses in the United States generate 44 percent of the country’s gross domestic product and employ more than 46 percent of the workforce. Without the active participation of small businesses in this effort, the country will fail in its vision for a sustainable future. While there is currently not enough academic research or political push to enable and empower small businesses to embrace sustainability, there are several ways small businesses can do their part, without external intervention.”

Vijayendra further explored these concepts in a piece for allBusiness Magazine, underscoring the difficulties small businesses encounter when attempting to incorporate sustainable operations management into their core strategy. “For small businesses, financial survival is a consistent concern,” he wrote. “In survival mode, it is difficult to imagine a way to achieve sustainability goals, especially with the perception that these initiatives will negatively impact profits. However, approaching sustainability as an effort to improve efficiency enables small businesses to increase this initiative without cutting into profits.”

Vijayendra’s recent research paper critically assesses the adoption hurdles for sustainable operations among small businesses. These well-articulated resources form the foundation for his upcoming book on inspiring small businesses to adopt sustainable operations management as their central strategy.

“My entrepreneurial journey began when I noticed this gap,” says Vijayendra. He pioneered a one-stop financial solution designed specifically for small businesses. “Then my work led me to discover more extensive operational and structural gaps that kept small businesses from achieving their full potential. This realization ignited my mission to bridge these divides, something I believe most business school models fail to address.”

In his recently published article in Forbes, Vijayendra further emphasizes the main reasons why small businesses must make sustainability the core of their business strategy, drawing on cutting edge research and real-world examples.

Throughout his consulting career, Vijayendra has positively impacted numerous businesses. He guided the $55M Italian energy company, Fortore Energia, on the feasibility of entering the U.S. cold-rolled steel market. For CSE Corporation, Vijayendra recommended product redesign and go-to-market strategies, facilitating the launch of their innovative IoT-based landfill methane monitor. He also helped the Center for Empathy Education craft a successful go-to-market strategy based on customer discovery and competitor analysis.

This industry recognition recently earned Vijayendra admission to the prestigious Forbes Council. But his dedication doesn’t stop with for-profit entities; he offers pro-bono consulting to nonprofits such as Community Food Bank and the Hollister Downtown Business Association, and has assisted the TiE USA in strategizing to boost its membership.

His ultimate belief is that a collaborative approach is needed to propel small businesses forward. By doing so, we can foster not only economic growth but also drive environmental and ecological revitalization. Small businesses play a pivotal role in our lives, and it’s through supporting their transformation that we can truly recognize their profound impact. Kumar Vijayendra’s work is testament to this, as he continues to champion the cause of small businesses globally.
