Green Thumb

From the corner

I was lost

No good peripheral

Wandering eyes succumbing to a horizon

Defined by indefinite boundary lines

I could never tell exactly where you ended

But today was different

The sight line told of a time unknown

A time, daunting

Of time without the most beautiful ambiguity

You’d gone in dusk

The night before, you’d drawn your conclusion

The night before, you gifted me disillusion

I was forced into your lilies

I pretended to never have cared for your tulips

But when your two lips parted slightly

Something changed

What once grew suddenly stopped growing

Drought came despite the tears

Fear featured arrogantly in the forefront

Anger irrigated your essence

The same way as when you were in your prime

Your petunias stopped growing when you left

And for awhile, the weeds

The weeds crowded your cultivation

Overtook the most beautiful

The least recognized parts of you

The weeds stole the show for awhile

And the sight line didn’t look as fine anymore

The ambiguity was clear

Boundary lines, defined

Searching for solace through the twilight

Shoots springing forth after the fall

Recognized desires springing forth after the fall

Purpose pushing through after the fall

Pulling the weeds well after the fall

Finally getting up after the fall

No force into your lilies necessary

I miss the slight parting of your two lips

Your tulips I now carry with me

Life lessons gone unrecognized before

Celebrated in the aftermath

No disillusion

Purple petunias of imperfect memories

Watered meticulously, cultivated

Now I am dauntless

Cracked skin under unforgiving sun

Unforgiving son receiving what he’s given

Digging through the dirt of you

If you only knew what I would have given

To have seen the vastness of you

To have defined you

To have understood all that you grew

In the name of… Me
