What Next for Fàbregas?

As the former Arsenal maestro looks set to move, In The Mixer runs through his likely destinations.

Fàbregas’ three year stay at Barcelona is set to end this summer, with Luís Enrique indicating that the Spain midfielder is no longer part of his plans. There will be no shortage of potential suitors for the talented 27-year old, in this piece, In The Mixer takes a look at where the midfielder will be plying his trade come next season.

Barçelona

Given the comments of Gerard Piqué overheard on Spanish television, and the murmurs coming from the Camp Nou it would seem that Fàbregas will be sold this summer. Yet given the potential exit of Xavi and a lack of quality depth in midfield for Barça he may still stay — but don’t hold your breath.

Chances: 2/10

Chelsea

With Frank Lampard leaving the club when his contract expires Chelsea have a Fàbregas shaped hole in midfield, and need to replace the goals that the departing Lampard scored. Questions remain over the Spaniard’s ability to fit into the defensive game preferred by José Mourinho, although his status as a home-grown player will certainly appeal to the London club.

Chances: 8/10

Arsenal

Fabregas enjoyed eight years at Arsenal, winning the FA Cup in 2005

The club have the financial clout to make a move for their former captain, who would be greeted with a hero’s welcome at the Emirates. In spite of Arsenal having first option on Fàbregas there is no immediate need for another creative midfielder given the emergence of Aaron Ramsey and signing of Mesut Özil, and there has been little interest from North London so far. In spite of this a reunion may still be on the cards; Wenger would undoubtedly appreciate having his experience, and come Arsenal’s annual injury crisis (next scheduled: February 2015) he would add depth and class.

Chances: 6/10

Manchester United

United’s overtures last summer may have been down to the former incumbent David Moyes, with Louis van Gaal having given no indication as to his intended transfer targets. Fàbregas would bring the quality that the club were so woefully short of last season, and the lack of Champions League football would not be an issue given the stature of the club and improvement that we will surely see next season.

Chances: 5/10

Manchester City

Much like Chelsea, the Premiership champions are in need of home-grown players for the Champions League, and considering the uncertain future of talisman Yaya Touré a move would certainly suit City. One barrier may be any FFP implications, however there is a chance that Touré could be used as a makeweight in any deal.

Chances: 7/10

Liverpool

Fàbregas fits in with Brendan Rodgers’ attempts to recruit players with experience in the Premiership, and would compliment the slick passing game implemented by the Liverpool boss. Although the club has not yet registered any interest, their pursuit of the Barçelona playmaker may step up should their attempts to sign Adam Lallana fail.

Chances: 6/10

Tottenham Hotspur

It would be a cold day in hell the day the former Gunner joined North London rivals Tottenham. In light of the fact that Fàbregas would be a useful signing, this one appears dead in the water — Spurs are predisposed to wasting money on unproven, European dross.

Chances: 0/10
