Multitasking is Killing Your Brain

Just as “jumpy mind” can be trained into you, by engaging in activities that redirect your focus frequently, so too can focused mind be trained into you — and even after you’ve already mastered jumpy mind.

It’s called concentration meditation. I specify it that way, instead of just saying “meditation” to differentiate it from mindfulness meditation (which delivers different benefits).

Want to practice jumpy mind meditation? Watch TV. Have text/email notifications turned on. Keep checking social media. Want to practice concentration meditation? Spend some time each day focusing on something thoroughly repetitive and inherently meaningless, like counting to 10, over and over, or watching your breath move in and out. Anything you practice, will become more of a mental habit. Take responsibility for your own brainwashing.
