Living with (and building for) the Amazon Echo

Great article. A lot of your ideas should be solvable in software, bluetooth and wifi. If Echo has an app (software) on your smartphones, when out of bluetooth range the wifi connected phone would become the I/O.

This type of I/O (including in the future gestures and projection) would probably require a densification at the network edge to reduce latency whereby the virtual you follows you around outside your home based on your contexts and predefined skills. The only think missing in that instance is cross-border settlements and security for things like off-net sensors, cameras and displays to make the ecosystem really generative and sustainable.

Of course the carriers should embrace this, but they won’t (just as the are rejecting much of LTE-D (device to device mesh at the edge) enabling it only for public safety) and so will be bypassed in the MAN and not just in the PAN/LAN as they already have. Game over. Fun stuff!
