Inside the Creation Process of a Visionary Artist

Light Wizard (née Steve Willis) is an artist who is challenging possibilities. As a result, the Australian is part of a generation that is redefining visionary art.

After his creativity emerged in high school, Willis went on to earn his Bachelor of Fine Arts in the US, then continued his studies in the Master’s program before returning home to Australia to concentrate on his craft; to hone his unique style.

That unique style is an incredible fusion of photography and sculpture. He repurposes and ‘upcycles’ everyday objects and materials — he makes the ordinary into the extraordinary.

If you explore Light Wizard’s website, you’ll find photographs of the different steps of his creative process. The artist has found material, heaped in large bins, with seemingly no organization apart from color-coding. But, boy, is that rainbow of miscellanea pleasing to the eye.

There is a photo, simply titled Bits and Pieces, that shows everything from discarded children’s toys to a vacuum hose.

Another picture depicts the artist’s workbench with monochromatic objects strewn about, ready for a new life.

Light Wizard’s creation process is fascinating to watch. He works methodically — thoughtfully and artfully arranging his chosen materials; building layer upon layer until his vision has been realized.

Once complete, we’re treated to a structure that is balanced, imaginative, and puzzling. It is then carefully installed, beautifully lit, and photographed.

The pictures of his designs are incredible. They appear to invite you in somehow; the objects seemingly tangible. All the while, you’re aware it’s a one-dimensional photograph. Viewing Willis’ work is truly a mind-bending experience.

Apart from what you’ll see on his website, the artist creates exclusive designs for collaborations with outfits like Inner Art World, where his creations can be found on shoes, boots, and other apparel.

His novel style blurs the line between fantasy and reality. He pushes boundaries; he’s consistently capturing curiosities and inspiring awe in audiences across the globe. He is a creator, a dreamer, an adventurer.

He is a Light Wizard.
