5 Tips to Changing Your Mind… Literally

The limitations and belief systems we create for ourselves become hardwired. If you repeat to yourself that you’re less than, unworthy, not able, unwilling, etc., that narrative becomes your truth and the path to liberating your brain becomes increasingly difficult. So the next time you’re up against the wall, think to yourself, “What’s the source of my doubt?” What have you taught your brain to believe about yourself and is that even true? 1) DON’T GET CAPTURED BY METAPHORS

Metaphors in poetry are something used to express something for a specific moment. But always be aware that it’s a metaphor. A metaphor can end up concealing more than it reveals. They can capture you and trap your ideas by locking them in your brain. Like the machine metaphor for the brain — people think it’s circuitry that’s fixed and hardwired. We now know that’s not true.

2) EMBRACE THE IMPOSSIBLE

You can reinvent yourself in certain respects, take on skills you never dreamed that you could take on throughout the course of your life. That’s an incredibly liberating thought. If you don’t challenge your brain it won’t maintain itself. Know that the brain, just like the body, requires some intensive work just for maintenance, and it’s OK to do that. It’s necessary to do that.

3) ALTER YOUR ACCEPTED REALITY

In life you get to a point where you allow yourself to believe that there are certain things about you that are true. And then you feel comfortable there. But to get to that next level you’re gonna have to believe new things about yourself. Your mind is going to combat that because it’s safer that way and it understands you as this thing, not that thing. For you to get to that next level it’s going to throw up all kinds of roadblocks, whether it’s anxiety or doubt. There’s going to be a whole host of things, the simple nagging voice.

4) THE MAJORITY IS NOT ALWAYS RIGHT

At the beginning of modern science the understanding was that subjectivity could distort our experiences and therefore the subjective is merely subjective. Think about optical illusions. We all know that we can get things wrong. And we all know that groups of people often get things more wrong — sometimes crowds are stupider than individuals. Similar to the emperor who has no clothes.

5) GREAT SCIENCE RAISES QUESTIONS

Science is about opening questions. It’s not just about closing questions. The people who think ‘well what does the science say?’ as though science can answer all things all the time have what I would call a consumer attitude for science. I’ve met a lot of great scientists and they’re all driven by wonder. They’re as interested in the questions as they are in the answers and they’re drawn to these big questions. Ask questions.
