today I loved the ocean

Today, for the first time,
I loved the ocean like
people are supposed to.

I clung too-tight to your little brown hand as we
waded through the waves,
and I fell in love with the way your smile stretched
all the way down to your kicking toes.

You belonged there, like your daddy,
content like you were shaped by water of
rock and sand.

You are
so young you are
teaching me everything about
joy —
it engulfs me the way each swell of water swallowed
our feet the way your laughter wrapped
warm around my heart.

Today, for the first time,
I belonged at the ocean
because I belong with you.
