Today, we speak to Inspiretec’s new Principal Software Engineer, Stuart MacCallum.

Where have you worked previously?

I’ve worked in a variety of roles, up to around 2011 I was a contractor in software development (primarily Java) so I moved around a lot. Since 2012 I have left the contracting game and have been exclusively in Cardiff working for a firm developing insurance software and another developing customer loyalty software.

How did you get into Java?
Way too long ago…. I was at Uni… it hadn’t been out long…. I was foolish.

What new technology on the horizon do you find interesting?
I’ve worked on micro serviced solutions before and at the moment I find that an interesting field. I have some experience in it now primarily using Spring Cloud technologies using docker. I’d love to extend that to try and implement a truly asynchronous microservice system using Kafka. It sounds very difficult for a few obvious reason… but most things worth learning are.

How do you keep your skills up to date?
Try not to be to comfortable, It sounds silly but if you aren’t constantly keeping up to date I feel you have a lot of catching up to do. I read blogs, manuals, follow sites like hackernews, proggit and spring.io
