I agree with you about the better availability of software for Nvidia.

This article of course is just an exploration on alternatives.

I think though what is clear is that AMD’s upcoming Threadripper may be a good choice for more conventional systems. It has enough PCIe lanes to perhaps take advantage of multiple NVMe SSD devices. This is an area that I am also curious about.
