Your brain at work
Been reading this book lately. I like it a lot so far, highly relevant for where I am in life — the demands of work and life are high and only getting higher. So as with anything important and demanding technique is important, and this book is a great way to improve technique. In this case it’s work and life techniques that takes the functioning of the brain into account.
The book is divided into chapters where each chapter goes through a typical challenge at work, like getting things done in when being overwhelmed with demands, emails and so forth from others.
The stage
The book introduces the metaphor of the prefrontal cortex as a stage — the prefrontal cortex is where the conscious and directed thinking occurs by the way. The metaphor says that different actions brings up different types of actors to the stage. Some actions make the stage very crowded and some actions calls on the action of actors that are hard to locate and far away (long term memory), or very close by (e.g. jumping to details when confronting a big problem — details are easy to get up on stage but perhaps they’re not the most relevant)
I’ll work through the chapters as I deem fit and offer a summary, and perhaps a not or two from my attempts to apply the knowledge.
