Less than 60 kilometers away from the famous city of Shiraz, the remains of the ancient city of Persepolis (Takhte-Jamshid) is located. Registered in UNESCO as world heritage site and with more than 2500 years of history, it is standing right there for you to set foot on. Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of Iran during the Achaemenid Empire. You may not have heard of this empire but you have for sure heard about the pioneers of human right establishment most notably ‘Cyrus the Great’ who ruled in this era. In Persepolis these are remains of several palaces and gates including Apadana palace and throne hall as well as the gate of nations. You may also visit the tombs of some of the kings of the time in the mountain stones with beautiful engravings of the stone. Persepolis is a memorable to place to visit. At day you may walk through the site and see different arts of it and read the information which is placed there for the visitors. And at night there is a sound and light program which is also something to remember. Once you visit Shiraz, do not miss the opportunity to visit Persepolis. Two other historical places nearby are Pasargad (where the tomb of Cyrus the Great is located and is another UNESCO world heritage sites) and Naghshe-Rostam where you may visit tombs of a few others Achaemenid kings as well as some remains of the same historical era.
