TV Watch: Booted for ‘Reboot.’

Spoiler Free! Today I planned on telling you about Screw, a British show on Britbox starring the amazing Nina Sosanya set in a prison. Teased it on the blog and everything.

But.

Then I watched the first three episodes of Hulu’s Reboot. And prison drama, even twisty, well-considered prison drama with a familiar and exceptional cast couldn’t lock up (!) being this week’s show.

Reboot is so self-aware the show itself is sentient. Not since the brilliant Episodes has TV about making TV been so plainly honest or hilarious about how the entertainment sausage is made.

Stocked with wildly talented cast members Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, Krista Marie Yu, Paul Reiser and much to my surprise, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom, among others, the show has invested in people who treat comedy as a craft. That counts inside the writers’ room, too, both the real and the fictional.

Brought to us by Modern Family creator Steven Levitan, Reboot follows the revival of a fictional sitcom from the early 2000s with the flavor of ABC’s “TGI Fridays” wholesome family lineup, but near the end of the era. And it’s that fine attention to detail that makes this show work.
