The story of Jodha, the queen of the Mughal emperor Akbar is no less than a fairy tale. This matrimonial alliance was done to strengthen Hindu-Muslim relationship. Several movies, stories, documentaries and articles have shown the love story between the Mughal emperor and the Rajput princess. But it is difficult not to acknowledge Jodha , because she is little more than just being a title in the page of history. Her timeless beauty, her regal approach in dressing and style has carved a legend of its own.

Origin of Jodha’s costumes

Jodhabai’s costumes go back in time. It had its roots in the Mughal Period. Her costumes were Mughal inspired, but had slices of Rajput style innovation on them with various designs and embroideries. The fabrics for Jodha’s costumes were manufactured and woven in Rajasthan. The grandeur of these costumes lied in the creative skills of artisans who wove exquisite styles with the finest Silk and Cotton, during the Mughal era.

Silk and Cotton fabrics were stitched along with intricate Kundan, stones and Zardosi embroidery. Jodha may have married the greatest Mughal ruler but her style was deeply rooted in the Rajput culture. Her wearing beautiful lehengas along with colourful dupattas with heavy borders was a proof of it. She accessorized herself with large neckpieces, earrings and nose rings to a match her lehanga. As a tribute to Rajput culture, Jodha was always seen covering her head with the pallu of her dupatta. She wore also wore a red bindi to complete her look . This also further showcased her sense of tradition.

History’s influence over the years

Bollywood block buster, “Jodha-Akbar” directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker brought back the timeless classic tale among the modern generation. Aishwarya Rai, who played the role of Jodha, gave the same regal representation through her character. Neeta Lulla, one of the most talented fashion designers designed the costumes keeping the historical roots in mind. The queen’s elegant and regal charm was portrayed through colourful dupattas along with flowy lehengas and jewellery featuring the typical Rajput style.

The Rajasthani charm with the vintage style of sarees and lehengas came back into fashion in a huge manner and became a huge craze in the wedding ceremonies of 2008 across India. In fact most of the Indian brides wished to looked like Jodha (Aishwarya) at that time.

Innovations

Traditional sarees and ghagra cholis, previously studded with coloured stones are now replaced with semi-precious stones, aiming to keep the originality intact. This has taken fashion into a different level all together. Skirts and lehengas are still traditionally woven with same fabric, thereby suiting the modern tastes.
