I will find another image next week, but for the time being deal with it!

It’s now time to run through the who won, who sucked and who used a wind machine in semi final 2 of Melodifestivalen 2016. With Robin Bengtsson and Ace Wilder impressing us with two great pop songs last week, It was always going to be a challenge for semi final 2 contestants to raise the bar. So let’s get Swedish and find out!

Melodifestivalen Semi Final 2

(In running order)

#1 David Lindgren — We Are Your Tomorrow

Overall Rating: 2.5/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? Classic David Lindgren music. It’s got a big chorus, it’s an anthem and very strobe light intensive.

Stand out moment: Unsure if he had one. The strobe lights were cool. His hair was annoying. Time for hashtag I think: #HairCutForLindgren

David is no stranger to the Melodifestivalen stage and has competed twice in 2012 and 2013. He’s great at dance/pop that has a big chorus and some funky hand choreography to keep you entertained for those 3 minutes.

But was it enough? I don’t think so. It wasn’t as strong as those previous two attempts, especially as “Shout It Out” in 2012 was pretty epic. Perhaps I wanted to hear something different from him? Perhaps it just wasn’t great? I don’t know and I need time to think.

How did he go? He’s in the final. Hmmmm interesting.

#2 Victor och Natten — 100%

Overall Rating: 3/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? Instantly makes me want to be a cheerleader. Super bubbly and toe tappy.

Stand out moment: Those slutty cheerleaders whipping their hair round and round whilst air compressors are shooting out smoke.

How did he go? Sadly the song didn’t make it through to the final or the second chance round. It might of been the fact that he was wearing an Ed Hardy inspired leather jacket. Really wanted to burn that.

#3 Molly Pettersson Hammar — Hunger

Overall Rating: 4/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? A slow building pop song at the start that then cascades into a hand raising chorus. Leave your hand in the air and keep on singing as the song only keeps on going getting better.

Stand out moment: Let me write you a list -

  • She was standing on fire!
  • She waved her hands like she was directing traffic.
  • The camera editing was cutting in and out in line with her soulful stares across the stage.
  • She just bloody nailed it!

Molly is another contestant who has graced the Melodifestivalen stage. Her song “I’ll Be Fine” was brilliant and she has only gotten better.

How did she go? Andra Chansen round! Which is great, but do think it should've been an instant entry into the final. Can I swap David Lindgren’s song out? C’mon Sweden!

#4 Isa — I Will Wait

Overall Rating: 4/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? A haunting, modern pop ballad. Drums, crashing cymbals, a choir of backup singers and a cold hard beat that went straight through your heart.

Stand out moment: The staging was pretty simple, but highly effective. Her gorgeous dress shone bright and casted a shadow against the hanging wall. It rippled, she shone and she kept on finding a new pose every single time.

There are a lot of returning artists to this semi final and Isa is no exception. Her song “Don’t Stop” in 2015 is completely different from “I Will Wait”. She has grown from a pop gem in 2015 to a future princess of euro-pop.

How did she go? Andra Chansen round. How!? Should of been instantly in the final!

(I’m really disliking David’s song for getting into the final now)

#5 Krista Siegfrids — Faller

Overall Rating: 3/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? Schlager pop — Kinda catchy and fun with a motor racing theme.

Stand out moment: Her jumpsuit with the bedazzled sleeves. Also the overly camp dancers — the one on the right with the dark hair is hot!

Fun fact: Krista performed in Eurovision for Finland in 2013 with her catchy song “Marry Me”. I was expecting something similar this year, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.

How did she go? The people didn’t say I do (Hahaha I’m being punny)

#6 Patrik Isaksson, Tommy Nilsson & Uno Svenningsson — Håll mitt hjärta hårt

Overall Rating: 2/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? Old people’s WestLife… Is that a thing?

Stand out moment: Crowd participation with their mobile phone lights, do love how pretty that looks.

It’s actually a nice song and the guys have chemistry between them so they are nice to watch. But three old guys on stage isn’t very Eurovision for me. It’s more like watching paint dry than an in your face explosion of Eurovision awesomeness.

How did they go? They didn’t get through (Hooray!)

#7 Wiktoria — Save Me

Overall Rating: 4/5 strobe lights strobing

What does it sound like? Country dance pop. A song you’ll find on Avicii’s — True.

Stand out moment: Simple outfits = crazy projections! She also had the Wonder Woman symbol projected on her a few times… Should Warner Brothers call their lawyer?

She nailed every moment of the song and it’s instantly catchy. She might of also been the crowd favourite that night as her cheer was pretty huge when she entered on stage.

How did she go? We have our second finalist. Well deserved but it’s very similar to Robin Bengtsson song. Am I predicting a theme? Possibly.

There we have it folks. Semi Final 2 was strong but did the right songs get through to the final? I don’t think so and we all know who’s my number one enemy at the moment.

Also all hail the #SchlagerDiva
