Kanye Syndrome

I’m just going to come out and say it. I really like Kanye West. I’ll be the first to admit he doesn’t always say the right thing at the right time but I like Kanye. I like that he can’t help but be who he is. I like that when he tries to be something else its so awkward so displaced you almost beg him to return to his true self. He forces you to appreciate his authenticity or at the very least accept it. “Thats just Kanye”, we like to say. I envy that. That ownership of who you are at the core. That your true self is so apparent to the world that the world calls for it. Think about it. How many of us are actually asked to be or valued for who we authentically are?

The world is a big ball of labels, categories and classifications. You must fit into, under, within something in order to be understood. You must be able to be defined, predictable, and common. When you don’t quite fit into any one set of parameters you inevitably will face a multitude of struggles. But don’t let that word fool you, struggles can be challenging yes, but also invigorating. Like a game of tug of war. When you pull the world towards you and not allow yourself to be pulled towards it, you feel more like a champion. Something about winning that struggle empowers you.

Being authentic, means being aware of who you are even if no one else can define you. You define yourself and you hold true to that. I’m all for being relatable, but sometimes I wonder if we try too hard and compromise our own individuality. Yes I like Kanye West because he’s just trying to continue to be who he is despite who we think he should be. Whether you agree with his descriptions of himself or not you can agree Kanye is one of kind. Kanye syndrome, those who display untamed authenticity. I used to apologize for my untamed authenticity but now I simply let people know I suffer from Kanye syndrome. Some how they seem to understand.lol
