Fintech Brexistentialism

Fintech will never have political relevance. The industry is more like a gunslinger than a gun manufacturer, tiny fintechs will just move on to the next place.

This is largely because Fintech is a ‘low employment’ industry. If anything it promises to eliminate jobs, and only create a handful of new ones that are out of reach to most people. If you overlay the geographic vote on Brexit with the locations of financial services jobs, I bet you’d find few jobs and what few you would find would be those most likely to be eliminated by fintech (backoffices and bank branches).

Pascal offers great insights on the likely changes, esp the loss of passporting, but these seem to me more about VC hand-wringing over changed assumptions. A relatively few people will move their residences, a relatively few offices will get emptied or filled. The numbers are so small they won’t affect labor markets or office markets.
