Code is absolutely part of the UX design considerations. We UX designers define the priorities for development. For example, accessibility and performance. If a designer doesn’t state them as priorities a developer might prioritize advancing their knowledge of JavaScript over the users’ priorities. I’ve witnessed this. 🤕

If you are a UX designer providing design for something on the Internet it is vital that you have deep, ever-expanding, knowledge of code and it should be in your designs. Design is not simply surface or animations. Design includes code. Many designers who come from print or Flash backgrounds don’t have a great understanding of the web, it’s inherent fluidity, and how to properly design for it. This leaves many design decisions for developers who often don’t have the cultivated empathy skills to properly design solutions.

If you are a designer who cares about the user, you’ll learn about code and test the [bleep!] out of your designs, alongside your developer, to gain greater insight into how you can most effectively design.
