What David misses is how users actually use the keyboard. It isn’t so black and white as sighted users and those using assistive tech. There are situations where a call center agent has a broken hand and is temporarily more keyboard reliant.
There is nothing wrong with the focus ring. It isn’t ugly. If anyone thinks it is they can pay attention to designing something flattering for it without removing it. Test all the things, iterate, rinse, repeat ad infinitum.
