Overcoming the Fear

To christen this nascent blog, I thought it apt to address the subject of the Fear, if only to start the ball rolling (because otherwise it ain’t rolling anywhere).

It’s probably safe to say that I’m not the only one convinced that within his head lies a cornucopia of good ideas. Nobody goes through life without the occasional strike of creative lightning — the idea that causes them to pause and ponder. It’s ideas like these that should really be put to paper. But I think we don’t, because of the Fear.

The Fear is a many-headed beast. On one head we see the fearsome maw of failure. This is the failure to write something good. As the saying goes: everyone is their own worst critic. I myself have a ridiculous standard of perfection when it comes to things I produce. This face of Fear stops you before you even start because why bother if you’re only going to fail? This is an obviously self-defeating force and needs to be seen for the absurd non-issue that it is.

Another of those heads is worthiness. Maybe you don’t think you’ll fail. Maybe you’re convinced that the prose will flow like liquid gold onto the page and proof-reading will be more like a joyous journey through literary excellence than a gruesome descent into dreary nonsense. But, though it might sound good, will it be of any worth to anyone? Will I catch the eye of author and columnist alike? I don’t believe writing is about worthiness. Write because you find something interesting and, because we life in a world of instant publication and information saturation, you can share your witterings with 7 billion other people. One day you might write something that a lot of people find worthy. But you’ll never know if you don’t try.

There are likely other heads to be considered. But honestly, this post has already become too long and I only really wrote it to overcome the Fear. Ignore the Fear, it won’t help you succeed. Write because you can and because you find something interesting. You’ll improve over time and there’s probably someone among those 7 billion other people who will see your ideas for the worthy, shiny, little things they are. Invoke your inner Shia LaBeouf and just do it.
