Ready to build a better blog?

Whether you’re new to blogging or you’ve been blogging for some time, implementing these tips today will make your blog instantly better!

1. Do A Competitor Audit

Start by drawing up a list of ten top blogs in your niche. Evaluate them in terms of look, design, and functionality. Screenshot the design features you think work well and think about how you might incorporate them into your own website. Look also at what your competitor might be missing. Do you have a key differentiator that sets you apart from the competition? Highlight that difference on your blog.

2. Perfect Your About Page

This is the most frequently visited page of your blog after your home page (also happens to be one of the most commonly overlooked pages) so it’s worth taking time to make it as professional as possible.

3. Check Your Blog’s Load Speed

Does your blog load quickly? A good site will load in 2 seconds. If your blog is taking longer than that, consider that around 40% of people will leave a site if it doesn’t load in 3 seconds. You can check your blog’s loading speed with a tool like Load Impact.

4. Optimize Images For Faster Loading

A lot of websites have images that are relatively large, which take a lot of time to load. Resizing your images can speed up the loading time.

5. Declutter Your Sidebar

Does your blog have a sidebar? Has it become crowded with widgets? Then it’s time to declutter KonMari style. Get rid of anything that doesn’t add something valuable to the reader experience.

6. Showcase Popular Content

One thing that you should keep on your sidebar is a list of your most popular content. Use it to showcase your best writing.

7. Provide Links To Older Posts

Put hyperlinks in each of your posts that direct people to your other blog posts on the same topic. This will increase readership and improve your SEO efforts.

8. Create An Email Sign-Up Form

An email sign-up form, also known as an opt-in form, is the best way for you to build a targeted list of permission-based subscribers to your blog. Typically, it’s a small box embedded on your website, blog, or social media sites so that a visitor can sign up to receive a newsletter, email offer, or similar from you. (For suggestions on where to add your opt-in form to your website, see 14 High Converting Places to Add Email Signup Forms to Build Your List).

9. Display Social Sharing Buttons

By making it easy for visitors to your site to share your content, you increase the likelihood that they will take this action. When more people share your content, you increase the chance of driving more visitors to your blog.

10. Make Content Scannable

We live in the age of content skim. People simply won’t stick around to read reams of text on a webpage as this graphic from Chartbeat shows.

Make your content highly scannable by using bullet points and lists to break up chunks of text, and varying the font size to differentiate between the more and less important elements of your page.

11. Choose Typography Carefully

Typography is made up of elements such as font type and size, kerning (white space between individual characters or letters), and tracking and spacing. It is important when it comes to making your content more comprehensible to the reader. According to Neil Patel, “ a typographically well-formatted copy ensures that the focus remains on the content and not on the effort required to read it.

12. Install A Spam Blocker

Install a plugin like Akismet to block spam comments. It’s a plug-in that helps you eliminate comment spam.

13. Backup Your Blog

You never know when your blog might get hacked, and the best defense is scheduling regular backups using a plug-in like BackWPup.

14. Sign Up For Google Analytics

Unless you regularly track your blog’s performance, you will have no idea whether it’s producing results or not. Google Analytics is a free tool which will allow you to identify which blog posts, keywords, and social media networks bring the most traffic to your blog. This information helps you plan ways to improve your blog’s performance.
