Tech is easy. People are hard.
Tech is easy. It doesn’t have a mind of its own. You can get as frustrated as you want with Siri or Alexa, but “they” are not going to get frustrated back. “They’re” going to do exactly what the programmers programmed.
Technology cannot be kind. Technology cannot be mean.
People are hard. People can be kind. People can be mean. We do have minds of our own. And our minds are remarkably, poetically, and achingly complex.
Therein lies the tech leadership rub.
We have to deal with stuff like:
- That human from accounting who is constantly interrupting people and severely needs a better verbal filter
- The leader of the product team does not understand how to delegate and dealing with said leader feels like jumping into the abyss
- That team member who is WAY too “go-with-the-flow” and repeatedly misses critical deadlines
- Or that other team member who is nice to a fault — who NEVER disagrees with anyone and it’s rather annoying
And this is only scratching the surface.
How do we deal? There’s no simple answer but I’ll tell you this: You CANNOT be an effective leader if you don’t keep your proverbial buckets full. Because every day your fellow humans are going to suck the life out of your buckets — sometimes inadvertently and sometimes on purpose. You need to be ready for this.
Put another way: ALWAYS put your oxygen mask on first.
