MDM Game 1 Altered Beast

Welcome to your doom!

Considering this was the original pack-in title for the console, Altered Beast is one heck of a difficult game. You’d think they’d make the difficulty curve slightly less brutal to get people to want to keep playing and invest in further titles, but then with the hindsight of being able to access all the games at once these days my view is perhaps a little skewed on this. If it was the only game you had at the time, you’d stick with it and keep improving…

Either way, it hasn’t aged well at all. It’s a direct port of the arcade version of the game, and it shows. Enemy placement is harsh at best and ridiculous at worst; in some cases I took a hit from one enemy to then bounce into a different attack and lose multiple sections of health. There’s no option to change the difficulty in the game, which means you either get better or just deal with it. As I say, it’s an arcade port, as such this isn’t a game designed for the player to be able to win easily…

Rise from your grave! Then get back into it again. Repeatedly…

The soundtrack is by far the greatest draw that Altered Beast still has. The transition when you grab your third orb and become the beast in each level (of which I saw three — wolf, dragon, and bear — before giving up) is glorious, and the musical theme is timeless, catchy, and gets you hyped up for battle. But then you die… Again.
