“What IT Should Mean”

They speak of love at first sight

I do not understand

That can’t be right!

How is it possible

To love an entity you know nothing about!

I am bewildered

It's probably a gene that skipped my person–

I do not doubt.

I can only love

When knowledge I have

Inner workings and quirks I know

And the darkest corners show;

I can only love

If you know yourself

What you want

What you need

And where you need help;

I can only love

Where maturity exists

Free will is present

But your heart can’t resist.

I speak only of love

When I know it’s real

Not infatuation which often is misnamed

But love-true,

The one that would never fade.
